FAQ

Q: What is a Shotkey?

A Shotkey is text shortcut to your favorite applications / folders / files. Unlike other hotkey programs, Shotkey does not make you create non-intuitive and difficult to press CTRL+ALT+X type of hotkeys. Instead Shotkey allows you to create a text string (called Shotkey) which would invoke the application.

Q: How do I create a Shotkey?

Right click on the application/folder icon and click on Shotkey. The (green) Shotkey window would pop-up just above the tray bar. Enter the Shotkey you wish to assign (eg "ie" for Internet Explorer) and press Enter. Previously assigned Shotkeys (if any) would be displayed by the Shotkey window. You could either press Escape to hide the window or Enter to create a new Shotkey for that application. You can create any number of shotkeys for the same application (for eg internet explorer can be "ie", "iex" and "iexplore"). In case the same Shotkey has been defined twice, the most recently defined one would be used.

Q: How do I execute a Shotkey?

Press the hotkey (default backquote(`)) to display the (grey) Shotkey window. Enter the Shotkey in the window and press Enter.

Q: Setting the options.

Load at Windows startup : Enable / Disable loading at Windows Startup Tray Icon : Enable / Disable the tray icon. Disabling this would cause the tray icon to appear when Shotkey 1.0 starts up. Hotkey for the ShotKey window : The default is backquote(`), change it to any other key / key combination (CTRL+S, CTRL+SHIFT+S etc)

Q: What are the default Shotkeys?

  • calc : Calculator
  • ie : Internet explorer
  • note : Notepad
  • paint : MS Paint
  • cmd : Command Prompt
  • outlook : Outlook Express
  • list : Shotkey Definition List
  • opt : Display options
  • quit : Quit Shotkey

Q: How do I edit the definition file?

While the context right click menu Shotkey creation would suffice for most purposes, you may want to look into the Shotkey definition file to create you custom Shotkeys. Type "list" in the Shotkey window to display the definition file.

The structure of each record in this file is

[shotkey] | [full path of application]

You can also use standard environment variables. (eg %PROGRAM_FILES%\iexplore.exe)
